Straight answers for leaders who want more

Questions I get asked by high-achieving leaders, answered the way I'd answer them across the table.

Articles

Why do high achievers burn out even when they love their work?

Burnout in high achievers is a math problem, not a motivation problem: demands outrun resources for too long, and high achievers are built to absorb the gap without asking for more.

Read

What is leadership capacity, and how is it different from capability?

Capability is what you can do. Capacity is how much you can carry without abandoning yourself, measured across six resources, not one. Most senior leaders don't have a skills gap; they have a capacity gap.

Read

Can you lead at a high level without burning out?

Yes, but only if you fund both tracks of leadership: what you do and how you do it. Elite sport builds recovery into every day; business mostly doesn't, and that gap is where the edge is.

Read

If I stop chasing, will I lose my edge?

No. The edge comes from your drive, not from the fear underneath it. Chasing runs on dirty fuel (proving, running from not-enough); choosing runs on clean fuel (a destination you can name). Same ambition, lower cost.

Why do your best people burn out and quit without warning?

Top performers rarely look burnt out. They never complain, never miss, never say no, and they leave suddenly. The warning signs are behavioural patterns, not complaints, and the fix is structural, not a wellness perk.

Read

Why can't I make the move when I know exactly what to do?

Being stuck isn't a lack of information or discipline. It's protection: delaying lets you avoid the verdict of being seen. Capable people stall because shipping costs them the identity that's been keeping them safe.

Read

I got everything I built for and I don't want it anymore. Is something wrong with me?

Nothing's wrong. Arriving and feeling done is a different problem from burnout: you didn't run out of gas, you ran out of mountain. A break won't fix it, and wanting less isn't the answer. The next climb has to be chosen.

Read

What's the difference between a chasing leader and a choosing leader?

Both are high performers and look the same from outside. A chasing leader is pushed from behind by the fear of not being enough; a choosing leader wants just as much and has decided what for. Only one builds something that outlasts adrenaline.
